My Water Bill Is Too High — I Think I Might Have a Water Leak

9/2/2021 (Permalink)

Water leaking out of a busted copper pipe. If you have a leaking pipe causing water damage, call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Northeast Spokane.

Is your water bill too high in Spokane?

What can you do if you think you might have a water leak but cannot locate the source?  There are some ways to narrow down the problem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has some tips to help you determine if you have water leaks in your home:

  • Pull out your water bill and take a look at the usage during a colder month, such as January or February. If a family of four exceeds twelve thousand gallons per month, there are serious leaks.
  • Monitor your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you might have a water leak.
  • Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak.
  • Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.
